2018 W T1 SILVER EAGLES U.S. MINT HOARD PR70 MDS MOY/RYDER SIGNATURES - ABSOLUTE RARITY

Ā
This set features two Type 1 American Silver Eagle proof coins discovered in the U.S. Mint Hoard. These coins dated 2018 bear the original heraldic eagle design by John Mercanti. Ā At the end of each year’s production, the U.S. Mint usually collects any of its unsold coins bearing the ā€œWā€ mintmark, removes them from their packaging and melts them down. We say ā€œusuallyā€ because in 2019 inside the West Point Mint's massive vaults some unsold Silver Eagle coins were discovered. Rather than melt them, the Mint made a surprise move and sold them to a buyer in a private auction. The coins that escaped the melting pot, have been designated by NGC as the ā€œU.S. MINT HOARDā€. This special designation gives the coins a desirable and rare provenance not seen since the famed Government Services Administration (GSA) Morgan Dollar hoard in 1972!

Both coins in this set have been individually hand-signed. One by Edmund C. Moy, the 38th Director of the U.S. Mint, and one by David J Ryder, 39th Director of the U.S. Mint. Moy served from 2006 to 2011, and Ryder served from 1992 to 1993 and returned to the position from 2018-2021. Both men were named in Coin World’s Most Influential People (1960-2020). Moy and Ryder brought many exciting modern coins to the marketplace, greatly enhancing the tradition of U.S. coin collecting with their leadership.
